Movies

Caught Ghost Rider with Robin 2 weeks ago. Even though I’m a huge comic book fan, it was an absolute piece of trash. I’ve discouraged both Roy and Weng from watching the show. But they are adamant to catch as it’s “Ghost Rider, dude, I must watch it!”. That’s what I thought too. Well, give me a call for supper after the movie, guys, provided you don’t choke on your tongues watching the show.

Went for ‘Dreamgirls’ with Lin Lin last week. The show was pretty decent. It kinda reminded me of a black version of Velvet Goldmine where they chartered the rise and fall of a 70’s glam rock star who was based on David Bowie. Eddie “I endorse fat suits for a living” Murphy was really great as James “Thunder” Early, to me, a cross between James Brown and Marvin Gaye. Jennifer Hudson was pretty decent but her vocals on her solo tunes were like vocal ‘shredding’. She’d out-Mariah Mariah Carey lah. Too much lah...

One really amazing thing though. Beyoncé apparently shed 7 pounds for the show but that ass… wooo, it’s still intact man! Very nice.

Anyway, here’s the Fantastic Four: Rise Of The Silver Surfer TV spot. Nice.

In case you haven't been keeping tabs, it's slightly more than 2 months to go to Spiderman 3. \m/

World's End Girlfriend - Scorpius Circus (live)

Recommended by Bryan. I thought the mosaic on the main man Katsuhiko Maeda's face was just hilarious. Like Japanese AV...

The Smiths - Some Girls Are Bigger Than Others (live)

This is supposedly from the final show they've ever played. You can catch this documentary about them here. Morrissey: That quiff!!! That quiff!!! Johnny Marr: Still fucken cool (or even cooler) after all these years.

Haven - Til The End

Max introduced Haven to me 2 years ago. I like them quite a fair bit. Singer Gary Briggs has a great tenor. I'm helping Max to flesh out one of his songs which he had written 10 years ago "about the girl who broke (his) heart when she left (him) after 2 months of dating". When he mentioned that he was gunning for an Oasis/ Ride feel, I rolled my eyes. No way lah. If I could, I'd rather give it a Haven or Suede sheen, that'd be nice.

Here's the video for the Johnny Marr-produced version.

Not very shiny...

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

The design looks okay only. Nothing fantastic (ahem...) but it's no rocket science to bring this character to life. Still, I'd pay $9.50 to see Jessica Alba in blue spandex again.

So I did.

Calexico - Alone Again Or (live Love cover)

I love Calexico. Not so much for Love but this is my favourite Love song. And it's not even written by Arthur Lee.

Beastie Boys - 3 MC's and 1 DJ

It's true. "Nobody does it like Mixmaster Mike can."

Mute Math - Reset (live)

Recommended by my friend Ian Ho. More Muse than Muse man. Check out the rest of their songs here.

McAlmont & Butler - Yes (live)

This song off their debut album in 1995 is pretty decent but their 2 singles 'Falling' and 'Bring It Back' from the 2002 album Bring It Back were fucken great. An amazing soul singer and his fuzz-pedal-addict guitarist-producer. Great combo. Anyone who can get their hands on Bring It Back please let me know. I've been looking for it for years.

Old skool hip hop joint

Was out at the Good Vibrations Festival last night. Came around 7pm and caught Electrico. They did a pretty good set, except for some mixing problems during the 1st song.

Proceeded to get pissed. Beer going for $8 per can was not funny. Hung out with Jay S (which non-hip-hop moniker is Jason Siau) and his 'hos for a bit. Which I hopped over to join S.T. (known to his mum as Sujin Thomas) and his bitch Victoria and those 2 rockers Caleb and Daniel (they is not hip-hop-non-stop-till-you-drop, yo).

Was great to catch up with MC A (who moonlights as the editor of JUNK, Adlin Rosli) and the soul sista Kim at his booth. The 2 crazy kids are here in town for the weekend. They'd be coming back for the Mosaic Music Festival. MC A introduced me to his posse as a Singaporean from a land with crap food. But we have more music festivals and a year-end bikini fashion parade aka ZoukOut! Take that, you Malaysians! *shakes fist at MC A*

Jurassic 5 was decent but suffered from the stage left array speaker breaking down on them.

The Beastie Boys came on in business suits with suitcases and did a instrumental jam. They were supported by a keyboardist, a percussionist and Mixmaster Mike who was fucken ace. As they meant biz-ness, they were 3 MCs and 1 DJ and they'd be getting down with no delay, throwing out hits like 'Ch-ch-check it out' and old classics like 'Check Your Rump' and 'Brass Monkey'. Though they didn't do 'Fight For Your Right To Party' which I didn't expect anyway, they did 'Sabotage' which was the first ever Beastie Boy tune I had ever heard. So I is happy.

The whole festival was great but I overspent... as usual. Heh

After the whole shebang, I caught up with K-Man (aka Kinho) and B-boy (aka Bowie) from The Breakbeat Theory, a live drum'n'bass act. They went to jam at a studio in Excelsior Hotel and helped me set up a keyboard so that I can jam with them. These guys are good lah so it was pretty embarrassing. Fer fuck's sake, I played a fucken Cmaj7sus4 chord for like 15 fucken minutes. But it was fun and it's been eons since I had jammed with anyone. Missed it terribly. I think these guys will have an interesting sound once they sort themselves out.

REM - So. Central Rain (live on Letterman)

Terence sent me the link. It was a live performance on 'Late Night with David Letterman', taken back in the era where, you know what they'd like to say, when dinosaurs roamed the earth, the police wore shorts and Michael Stipe still had hair.

I love this clip which they did on Sesame Street. I used to have this before my hard disk crashed. Here's one which REM with Thom Yorke replacing Patti Smith on 'E-Bow The Letter'.

I <3 REM.

The Go! Team - Junior Kickstart

From Billy. Fucken ace!

Don't you wish...

... you were a rock star? From NME:

Poison frontman Bret Michaels is set to star in his own reality television show on VH1.

Michaels, whose band scored megahits in the 80s with 'Every Rose Has Its Thorn' and 'Unskinny Bop', will be looking for love in the show which is called 'Rock of Love With Bret Michaels'.

According to a statement: "the hard-rockin' Poison front man is looking for a woman who can truly keep up with his Rock 'N' Roll lifestyle and not become jealous of his one true passion - performing, which has been the reason for and destruction of most of his relationships."

The programme will be similar to the hugely successful 'Flavor of Love', in which Public Enemy rapper Flavor Flav starred.

Michaels will live with "a bevy of beauties" in his Los Angeles mansion, who will perform various tasks and challenges in an effort to see who will best fit in with his lifestyle.

'Rock of Love With Bret Michaels' will air in July on VH1.

In other music news, Nine Inch Nails is streaming their new single 'Survivalism' on their MySpace page.

Is Christopher Nolan the new Sam Raimi?

As reported on SuperHero Hype, Aaron Eckhart is in talks to sign on as Harvey Dent aka Two-Face, in the Batman Begins sequel, The Dark Knight. Things are shaping up really nicely.

What Goes Around Comes Around

Music video featuring Scarlett Johannson

Live in Paris

The man's a genius, I swear!!! Kinho and I had this discussion. I personally think that he's the George Michael of this generation while Kinho insisted he's more like Michael Jackson. Which is true since Timberlake modelled himself as Wacko Jacko.

Justin Timberlake – Ain’t No Sunshine/ My Love (live at the 2007 Grammys)

He’s joined by the winner of ‘Perform with Justin Timberlake at the Grammys' contest, Robyn something. The man’s good…

Bruno

From Max's blog.

Can Pump...

After I wrapped up recording of our parts for a demo for a The Love Experiment tune, we had some time to kill since Yeeyong had already left with his wife an hour before.

Weiyuan and I took out one of his WIP (work-in-progress) and tweaked it. I added a very crunchy rock riff to it. Ever since I've watched that A Perfect Circle YouTube video, I've been inspired to do a heavy rock song. This's probably it. Anyway, the tune is called 'Can Pump'. It's an in-joke which will take too long to explain.

Ian is coming over this Thursday to track 'Disco' which I'd probably be renaming it to 'Disco Sex'. The 2 Lard Brothers were out recce-ing venues last Thursday and we were at The National Museum (which rocks. You guys should check it out.) and heard an audio interview with veteran DJ Chris Ho. He mentioned that in the 70's till even the early 80's, the word 'sex' was banned from being spoken on radio. And strangely, 'disco' too. We've come a long way, baby.

The Lard Brothers is heading towards 5 complete songs already. We'd be streaming all the new songs on our MySpace page within the next month. 'Democracy' has a new mix which we'd be uploading that as well.

Interestingly, my DJ colleague was telling me that Fatboy Slim has remixed Chris Issak's 'Wicked Game'. Hmm... I wonder how it'd be like. Just waiting for him to send the mix to me.

Okay, back to remixing highrise.

Someone buy me...

This.

Head In A Hole

Looks like we don't have to wait that long for Trent Reznor to release another Nine Inch Nails album. According to Pitchfork, he's set to release Year Zero on April 17. The album's official site is here. With Teeth didn't register that well with me. The wait between each album is like more than 5 years. Well, looks like someone's has more than a "head in a hole"; the wallet's getting a hole too. I kill myself... Been researching too much on stand-up comedians...

In other news, Feist will release The Reminder a few days later on April 23 while Björk will release her new one Totempole somewhere in May. I guess I'm the only one that didn't like Medúlla. But I still love Björk.

Prince live @ Superbowl

Adlin pointed out this performance to me. Nothing less than over-the-fucken-top is ever expected from the Purple Midget. I <3 Prince!!!

Free As A Bird...

Finished my IPT (volunatary Remedial Training for my National Service liability) and IPPT today and no more till... well, next year which I change to a different physical fitness category status. Sigh... And no, I failed the IPPT in case you are wondering.

Bumped into Danny Chow, my ex-camp mate yet again. Great to see him. We had dinner at the nearby hawker centre and managed to bump into Khai and his girlfriend Diane. Always great to meet old friends.

Just started on the highrise remix. Will comment on that when it's almost done. I'm on the verge of scrapping the Lard Brothers' George Michael tribute song; I can't find anything to go on with the idea anymore. Fuck.

Koop - Come To Me

Recommended by my colleague. Koop's from Sweden. It's interesting to note as they are neither metal nor indie twee-pop. It's big band jazz but the interesting twist is that all the instruments are actually samples. Very cool, indeed.

Here's an excerpt from their biography:

Koop is Magnus Zingmark & Oscar Simonsson. When listening to Koops music it's somehow easy to believe that it's played by a small orchestra, but in fact the music is based on samples. Thousands of small clips from records puzzled together into new songs. All the drums, strings, horn sections and choirs are actually sampled! This is a very time consuming way to make music (it's one of the reasons it takes such long time to make a koop album), but it's the only way to create the surreal Koop sound. One thing though, that for sure aren't sampled, is the vocals. Many singers has blessed the Koop albums with their talent. When playing live Koop transforms into a 7-9 piece orchestra including one or two singers. The line-up may vary from time to time so if you are looking for the personel on a specific concert please dont hesitate to drop a message. Koop themselves play piano/accordion (Oscar), sampler (Magnus), and wear dresses.

Yes, they look like Boy George.

Here's their official site and you can stream the songs from their MySpace page.

Hunting high and low...

Hey, I had to crack an A-Ha joke... If any of you guys see the following 2 OSTs (official soundtracks), please let me know where you've found them. I'd pop by to get them. Can't seem to find them at Borders or HMV. Thanks!

Wong Kar Wai's 'Ashes Of Time' OST

Giuseppe Tornatore's 'Cinema Paradiso' OST

Anyway, I've just gotten some raw files from Tim of highrise to remix one of their tunes 'Rain' under The Lard Brothers. But now, I'm thinking if I should have picked a more uptempo tune instead. Hmm...

In other news, Max and I will probably resurrect Novak which was initally our Brit-pop project and we record what we lovingly call 'pussy' music... Was out with the Camra guys, Dionne, Randolf and Fuzz, hanging out having some drinks and talking about this whole Lard Brothers project. I think it's time to shift it to our original direction of doing hip-hop. No, seriously...

Harry's pretty hairy

I kill myself. Got this news off Gracie.

Edit:

The news kinda reminded me of his guest appearance on Ricky Gervais' 'Extras'.

This producer Armen which works under a few monikers just added us on our Aging Youth MySpace. I really like this stuff he's putting under MIME Unit. Check it out here.
